My first experience on the Groupon website came after I
entered my email address and was quickly taken to a page
where I could get "$25 for Up to $50 Worth of One Full-Service
Grooming Session at Dog's ******* Pet Grooming". The next offer
was much more appealing since I don't own a dog - $15 for $32
Worth of Tea Sticks from a local tea shop.
Along side these deals came Groupon's Promise to their users:
"Nothing is more important to us than treating our customers well.
If you ever feel like Groupon let you down, give us a call and we'll
return your purchase – simple as that."
Perhaps, it's this simplicity and the great discounts which has
made Groupon one of the most popular and one of the fastest growing
sites on the web. However, you can't underestimate the simple power of
offering something that's local and easily accessible by the user.
But that's too simple, we must look deeper. The true power behind
Groupon and sites like it, is not only these local deals, but the
simple effectiveness of list building.
The driving force behind Groupon is list building. Plain and simple.
Having a list of ready-to-buy customers is priceless and everyone
involved knows it. Especially if those customers will return time
and time again, even after the discount or deal is finished.
Groupon is only an introduction to the party. A party that lasts
will into the future, if the service or product is of top quality
and the people offering it know what they're doing. This first
impression and introduction is well worth the price for the merchant
because of this contact building. Many are ready and willing
to write off any short-term expenses for long-term gains.
Again, it is the power of these lists which are built that makes
Groupon possible. Besides, everyone comes away happy, the customer
gets a great deal and the merchant gets a repeat customer who will
buy more than the deals being offered. Groupon is a great marketing
strategy for any business or company.
Google appears not too happy with all of this and has even tried
to buy Groupon for 6 Billion and was not accepted. Rumor now has
it that Google is planning its own program called "Google Offers"
which basically will do the same thing as Groupon. Perhaps Google
is thinking strategically, they need another Facebook like a
house on fire.
In essence, what everyone has to realize, every popular social
website like Facebook, is really a list building program. A list
that's over a half billion strong and growing. There is a lot
of value in having a list with those numbers and the marketplace
has responded with investment capital and interest.
Groupon has taken the power of list building and expanded it
to the power of 100. In other words, Groupon has made list
building available to local merchants and this is the real
service Groupon is selling. Not that there's anything wrong
with this practice, list building should be the main objective
of any business online or off-line.
Gathering and collecting a list of buying customers is a valuable
business asset, one which will pay dividends long into the future.
Building lasting relationships with these customers should
be just as high on your agenda mainly because the quality of
this relationship will largely determine the profitability of your
list.
Regardless, business owners and webmasters should look towards
sites like Groupon and see how effective list building can
truly be for their marketing. They should also be applying the
same strategies to build their own lists and grow their businesses.
Follow Groupon's example and list building will also reward you
in more ways than you can imagine. Just build that list.
